What Is Insured Tow Transport? Why It Matters
When you call a tow truck, insurance is probably the last thing on your mind — but it should not be. Your vehicle can sustain damage during transport, and knowing who is responsible for that damage is a critical detail to establish before you choose a tow company.
What Is Insured Tow Transport?
Insured tow transport is a guarantee that covers any damage your vehicle might sustain while it is on the tow truck's platform or in its grip. If a scratch appears during transit, a mechanical fault arises from a securing error, or an accident occurs, the company's liability coverage comes into effect.
How It Differs from Standard Towing
An uninsured tow company will transport your vehicle — but it is not legally obliged to be held responsible for damage that occurs in transit. The burden of proof falls on you, and that is often a long and draining process. With insured transport, documented liability is defined from the outset.
What You Should Check
- Ask the company directly whether it carries transport insurance. If they say yes, ask to see the policy or a certificate.
- Insist on photographs of the vehicle at loading and unloading. These serve as evidence if damage is later disputed.
- A handover record should be signed. This document records the condition of the vehicle at pickup and delivery, and protects both parties.
- Pay particular attention on intercity transport. The longer the distance, the higher the risk — and the more important the insurance.
